Does anyone have a
recipe for something similar to Onion
Soup Mix? I have a recipe that uses an envelope of
it, but it came out salty, and I'd like to make it again,
but cut down on salt...
Thanks! Mari in NY
For Mary Ellen Bowman. I
found this recipe on EZBoard.com, but I don't know if it's
the same as A&W's recipe. I'd never seen that one. This was
the only "loose meat" recipe I could find. I hope it's what
you're looking for (or at least close).
Wendy, NJ
1 pound hamburger
1 tablespoon mustard
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon Tabasco sauce
1 tablespoon B.B.Q sauce
1 teaspoon celery salt
1 onion, chopped fine
1 can Tomato soup
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Brown meat, add rest of ingredients.
Cook over low heat for 1 to 1-1/2 hours.
Serve on hamburger or hot dog buns.
Cook over med-low heat for 3/4 hour. If you let it simmer
for the longer time the flavors blend better.
Betty T. in Georgia was
asking for help with freezing
zucchini. I shredded my zuchinni
and measured out the amounts I needed and put it in
freezer bags, marking the amount. Then when I was ready to
bake something I would just pull a bag out of the freezer
and add it, frozen, to my batter. If you let it thaw, you
will have lots of liquid and a big mess! Worked for me.

Sorry for the second
response in one day, but this is to answer the question from
Angela in Huntsville about the pretzel
salad. Both the 1/3 cup and the 1/2 cup amounts of
sugar are listed in the ingredients. The 1/3 cup is mixed
with the pretzels and margarine, and the 1/2 cup is mixed
with the remaining ingredients. Hope you enjoy the salad. It
is a favorite of ours.
Also, like many others, the bologna salad recipes brought
back many memories of my family in my younger days. I still
use that recipe often, only now I make chicken or turkey
salad instead of the bologna. Probably the meat that we like
the best fixed this way is left-over roast beef. I grind it
up just like we did the bologna and use the same
ingredients. It is delicious.

Hi there Nancy and the
boys, and my recipe family.
I bought a jar of Rhubarb Relish
at a Trading Table and I was wondering if any one has a
recipe for it as my Mum and I really enjoyed it.
I was made by a Polish lady and has onions and curry powder
in it along with the rhubarb.
Thanks, Elizabeth, Bendigo, Australia
Nancy I understand what
said about Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.
We use to have them and about 3 to 4 years ago we stopped
eating them because our Dr. was up set. It was hard to stop
but what I started to do was smell and then think that I
didn't gain any weight doing that.
Doris, S. Indiana it was so good to hear from you. Hopefully
you will have a speedy recovery and you will be posting
recipes. I would like to have your recipe for bologna ground
sandwich when you have time.
In the newsletter 5/31 Marie, MO and Cheryl, Ohio wanted the
Blender Cheesecake recipe and it was in the
5/10 newsletter near the end of the newsletter, I say
about 3 or so from the end by Judy/Lola. This newsletter
just happened to be 1 page.
In the 5/31 newsletter Darlene, WV
has a good information about headphones. That is a good
idea but we will have to wait. I had asked if he was going
to watch this and he said no but he did. In the Indianapolis
area they don't have the race on until that evening so he
did know who win before watching. I just go another part of
the house. That is the only sport that I don't watch a part
or all of.
Nancy have a great day and take care.

This is for Sue and her
canning jar dilemma. How about
making a double batch and put it in 3 quart jars. That's
assuming you want to make more than one jar. :))

Hi Nancy and Friends
I'm looking for a cake/pudding recipe that my mother made in
the early 50's. She called it "Cottage
Pudding" and I think it had some kind of lemon sauce
poured over the top of it, but my mind can't remember any
other details except that we loved it as kids.
Anyone have any idea what it was or how to make it?

This is for Cat in Olean
NY, who request a recipe for rhubarb custard pie. This is
the one I use for gatherings of any kind and get great
raves. Hope she will enjoy it.
Glad things are going better for you Nancy. Take care.

Rhubarb Pie
Makes 9-inch pie
4 cups unpeeled diced rhubarb
1-1/4 cups, more or less granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup flour
3 whole eggs
1 1/2 tablespoons dry bread crumbs
1-1/2 tablespoons butter
1 9-inch unbaked pie shell
Streusel Topping (recipe to follow)
To prepare rhubarb for pie, remove ends, wash thoroughly,
and dry on a towel. Cut into uniform lengthwise strips, then
crosswise into pieces 1 inch long and ¼ inch wide.
Mix sugar, salt, and flour, and add to diced rhubarb. Beat
eggs lightly with a fork and stir into mixture. Sprinkle the
pie shell with breadcrumbs. Fill the shell with rhubarb
mixture, and dot with the butter. Sprinkle with streusel
topping. Place on cookie sheet and bake at 450◦F for 20
minutes, then reduce heat to 350◦F and bake about 20-30
minutes more. Pie is done when knife inserted in middle
comes out clean.
Streusel Topping:
3 tablespoons cold firm butter
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup coarsely broken pecans (optional)
1/3-cup sugar
Blend all ingredients with pastry fork until crumbly. Put
over pie.
Nancy-Just had to
comment on all of the answers to the ground meat sandwich
filling. My mother would buy minced ham by the chunk and
dried it up, add pickle relish is she had it, mayo and it
was used for funeral sandwiches. It go to be known as
funeral sandwich meat in our area. Of course, eggs were
added sometimes to stretch the meat a little further. We
loved those sandwiches. It is hard to get bologna or minced
ham by the chunk any more. The last time I wanted some I had
to go to the local butcher shop to get it. It is not as
cheap as it used to be either. Now it could be classed as a
delicacy by the price anyway.

Hi folks! I thought I’d
throw in my 2 cents on a couple things. Regarding
Corn Relish—we have always
served it with pinto beans, pork chops and cornbread. It
adds a little “twang” to the taste of the beans, etc—similar
to the taste of a Chow-Chow.
Regarding cleaning shower stalls /doors – we live in a 60’s
house with a master bedroom that has a small bathroom
attached. It has a ceramic-tiled shower stall. Murder to
clean. Nothing worked. If anything I tried did work, I was
tired from all the elbow grease I had to use to try to get
it clean. Then I read somewhere about using Lemon Oil—yep,
furniture stuff—pure yellow lemon oil. I bought a cheap
bottle and squirted on the walls with an soft cloth. Works
like a charm and it smells good. Scum is gone! Walls are
shiny and actually repel the water until the oil wears off,
then I re-apply. Except for the really hard mineral stuff on
the door, it works quite well on the door also. I did have
to scrub with another cleaner on the door to get that off,
but then I wiped it down with the lemon oil…now no more
problems with the soap scum—Hooray!
Thanks Nancy & crew for all you do! We appreciate you!!!

Hi Nancy and all. Sounds
like a lot of us like pea salads, so here are 2 more we make
a lot.
Palmetto Pea Salad
1/2 lb. bacon (40% less fat is just fine), diced
8 level T. mayonnaise (we like Hellman's)
1/4 c. lemon juice
Big dash or 2 of seasoned pepper
2 10 oz. boxes frozen peas
8 green onions
1 rounded c. small cubes of colby cheese
Cook and drain bacon and set aside.
Wisk mayo, juice, and pepper together.
Mince the onions, plenty of the green part too, and add to
dressing.
Add the still frozen peas and cheese cubes , crumble the
bacon over all, mix and chill for at least 8 hours. Serves 6
to 8.
Aunt Catfish's Pea Salad clone
(from the old cook's days)
1 10 oz. box frozen peas
1 2 oz. jar diced pimento, undrained
1/2 c. each ripe and pimento stuffed green olives, sliced
1 4 oz. can mushroom bits and pieces, drained
3 celery heart ribs, very thinly sliced
1 T. plain olive oil
1 T. canola oil
3 T. red wine vinegar (or more to taste)
Steam unthawed peas over boiling water 3 minutes, set aside
to drip dry. Slice celery. Combine all ingredients gently
and chill. Serves 5-6, easy to multiply.
Wendy, NJ, thanks again for the Bang Bang Shrimp
clone..........we made it last night, served it on romaine
shreds like they do at the restaurant, and it was just
absolutely terrific.

For Betty T in Ga - I

Everything!

They've even got a few things I didn't know I could freeze.

a recipe for Chicken Caprese is there. The sauce is part of
that recipe. Hope this is all right to send this web site
address, Nancy. So glad you are free from the fear you kept
experiencing from that break-in. Our children live on Lake
