This “Thank You” is for Peggy. I have never cooked with wine before and the recipes you sent into Nancy’s sound wonderful. I can’t wait to try them.

I think I will try all three and then let everyone know which one is my favorite.
Thanks again, Angie in Ohio

Aunt Nancy;
Tomorrow on my blog I’m going to have a freebie that will be an Easter gift box made in a Chinese Take Out style. It will be a fun little gift for the readers and for any kids that they want to do little treat for or to give away cookies etc.

I designed it in such a way that the Easter portion is separate from the box so it can be used all year around. I hope your readers will enjoy it!

Love, aj

This is for Gail in LA about the birds nesting in your hanging basket. My husband took some wire and made me a little round container which you just put down in the dirt and it sticks up a little bit so the birds can't get in there to build a nest.

There is no reason why you couldn't bake the Amazin' Raisin Cake in a 9" x 13" pan but then, of course, you cannot frost and fill with whipped cream.

I, too, did not get the Thursday-Friday newsletter until Sunday morning. Thanks to all who sent Butterfinger bar recipes.

Good Morning Nancy and Fur Balls
Hope all is well with you. Just love the newsletter. Can you freeze the zest from oranges or lemons for later use? Have a wonderful day and keep up the good work

Hi Nancy,
Last night a lady from Texas called, “I’m so glad you guys sell cinnamon chips.  My husband loves cinnamon chip cookies.”   She ordered 24 bags.  Her husband must really like cinnamon chips cookies.  In Texas, they do things in a big way.

Now we have maple chips from the same producer.  Like the cinnamon chips, they are intensely flavored and very good.  Like cinnamon chips, they are great in cookies, breads, and muffins.

Folks at Nancyland can save 30% when they buy cinnamon chips or maple chips

For Gail in LA, March 25, re birds in her fern.

Tie a CD above the plant, birds don't like the colors and the sparkle that comes from the CD.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for the Pickled Easter Egg Recipe. Sounds delish and "eye-catching" too. Do you think it would be OK to add some sweet purple onion rings to the combo?

To Karen in Illinois
Sorry about that typo. The Lemonade Pie needs two cream cheese (8-oz each) or 1(16-oz). Hope you enjoy it.

Hi Nancy, have to respond to Angie in Ohio about her white wine. Angie, if you do not like the taste of the wine to drink it, you will not like cooking with it either. I would suggest that you give it away or dump it. The rule for cooking with wine, is it is a wine you enjoy drinking. That is why one should never use the so called "cooking wines" cause you don't want to drink them! If they are not good to drink they are not good to cook with!
Good luck,
Billie in Fl

For anyone looking for a FoodSaver that doesn't crush delicate foods like breads.

You can FoodSaver almost anything with out mashing it if it's frozen.
I take a loaf of bread and portion it out (usually about 6 slices) and freeze them on a cookie sheet.

Then I FoodSaver them and put back in the freezer. Take a package out the day before you need it, let it thaw unopened and it's just like fresh.

The bread, rolls or whatever won't smush because it's frozen.
I have the FoodSaver Pro but if it ever dies I'm going to get a Magic Vac Maxima.

Less money and motor is stronger.
It's $158.95 on eBay. And no shipping cost.
If you want to know more, join the FoodSaver group on Yahoo.
You'll get more info than you ever wanted to know.

I go to ebay and purchase things all the time.  One must be very careful in purchasing things from there.  Check to see how many negatives a seller has and read why there are negatives (if they have any.)  If the seller hasn't been online long or has changed there name often beware.  Read carefully what is in the description.  Find out what kind of return policy they have.  It is best to be cautious of those you don't know or a company you have never heard of.

Nancy, Like many others, I really appreciate the newsletter. I like feeling in touch with so many people. You work so hard for us. Now for my question' a while back someone sent in several recipes for the XPRESS 101. I was having some trouble with my computer and lost that section. Could you please tell me where to find them> I use mine often since theres only two of us.
Thank you, Mt.Gal Shirley

Hi Nancy, Dee in SIL was asking for a recipe for a Toffee Bar made in the school cafeteria's back in the 70's.
I have this recipe...but I'm not sure if it's the one you want. My school made the Peanut butter Bars....Mmmm, I always wanted that one. A light brown crust...could be graham cracker and a creamy peanut butter layer with Chocolate melted and smoothed on top. Anyways, here is the recipe...hope it helps!

Toffee Bar
Ready in: 1-2 hrs
Serves/Makes: 48 Bars

1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 1/2 cup quick-cooking rolled oats
1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs
1 cup semisweet chocolate pieces
1 cup almond toffee pieces
1 cup sliced or chopped almonds
1 can (14-ounce size) sweetened condensed milk

Heat oven to 325 degree F. Melt butter or margarine in a 13 x 9 x 2- inch baking pan in the oven (about 6 minutes). Remove pan from oven.

Sprinkle oats and crumbs evenly over melted butter or margarine; press lightly onto bottom of pan using the back of a large metal spoon. Sprinkle the chocolate pieces, toffee pieces, and almonds evenly over crumb mixture. Drizzle all with sweetened condensed milk.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until edges are bubbly and center is just lightly browned. Remove from oven and immediately run a narrow metal spatula or table knife around edges of pan to loosen the cookie. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack; cut into bars.

I wish I could remember the person who sent in the idea of using the apple cider vinegar with a paper funnel on top. You are wonderful ~~~BIG HUGS~~~ I've tried the vinegar but never the funnel...it works wonderful!!!!!!

I have two parrots and the food they eat have fruit juice in them for coloring, and sometimes those rotten fruit flies show up.You are a genius lol thanks so much!

One more thing...there is a product sold in Wal-Mart for Gypsy Moths. It is called "Birdseed Moth Trap" made by BioCare. it works great. it is a sticky trap that you can put in your pantry or by your birdseed. It has pheromones in them that attract the male moths and they are caught in the trap. It is around $5.00 and has two traps in them. Gets rid of them everytime !!!!!!!!!!! if you can't find the product at Wal-Mart, Meijer's carries them also. Worse case, you can order them on-line at WWW.PANTRYPEST.COM. I've ordered from them before and their product is great also!
Evelyn~Mi.

Thanks Caroline from MO.
I will give the "Sweet Tomato Chili Sauce" a try.

Hi Nancy!
Tona in Bama has done it again. I made her Cream Cheese Banana Nut Bread with Cinnamon Crisp topping last night (1/17/07 newsletter). This is by far the best banana nut bread I have ever tasted. It is much better that the Indescribably Delicious Banana Bread that I thought could not be beat. The recipe is easy and it made the prettiest colored loaves I have ever made. They are so moist and the topping added that special touch. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I already ate one of the pieces I brought to work and my boss scarved down the other one! Thank you, Tona. And Thank You Nancy. We all appreciate you so much!

Hi, Nancy,
I hope you and your babies are doing well.

I told Doris in S. Indiana that I would let her know when the bluebonnets are showing their pretty faces in central Texas, because she wanted to come see them. Doris, they are everywhere and we're getting rain right now, too, so hopefully this will be a good year for them!

I thought I'd share an easy, light pie that I like to make for Easter. It almost tastes like cheesecake, but my husband will also eat it and he doesn't care for cheesecake!

Fluffy Lime Pie
1 pkg. unsweetened Kool Aid, Lemon Lime flavor (the size that makes a 2 qt. pitcher)
1 (14 oz.) can Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk (not regular canned milk)
1 (8 oz.) carton Cool Whip, thawed
1 (9 inch) graham cracker crust
Dissolve Kool Aid powder in Eagle Brand milk; fold in Cool Whip and spoon into crust. Cover; refrigerate for 3 hours or til set.

Hope all in the family are having a great week.

In the March 21 newsletter Gloria asked for a triple chocolate cake recipe. There were quite a few submitted using a cake mix. I don't know if Gloria would be interested but here is a 'from scratch' triple layer cake. A regal and impressive cake that is a pleasure to bake and serve, a cake that takes a little time to put together but oh so very worth it. I usually make this for a holiday dinner.
Great newsletter!

Susie in NW Michigan, I think this is it!!! Sounds like the ingredients would be correct for the Toffee Bars I remember. Now, if I can only find the time to make them! Thanks so much for sharing the recipe. And thanks to the other recipe family members out there who helped out in trying to find just the right one. Everyone is so great on this site. Oh, and I'm so glad to hear that someone else likes the Spanish Rice recipe. Have a blessed day everyone!

Dee in SIL enjoying the sunny over 80 degree weather between rainshowers!

PS. Was wondering for those of you out east that were under all the snow. We along the Ohio River have been anticipating flooding when all of your snow has melted and drained into the river. Are you all thawed out yet? Just wondering, because we really haven't had any flooding of the river that badly yet.

Hello Nancy and all the others. I was at a wedding Saturday and one of the ladys had made Banana Bread which was white with no nuts. Had a cream cheese filling i need the recipe for white Banana Bread if anyone has it.

For Melinda in Chattanooga,
When my niece had her baby shower, one of the games we played was called the dirty diaper game. The clever gamesters took assorted chocolate candy bars and candies, smashed, chopped, or melted them a little and smeared into little disposable diapers. They were then put into paper bags, passed around the table, and we had to try to identify the origin of the "poop". This made for great video later when we saw ourselves, a group of grown women, smelling, studying, and really examining what looked like "poopy diapers".

(One lady got caught tasteing!) Some of the candy used was m&m's, reeses pieces, snickers, Baby Ruths, Hershey, etc.

Grilled Steak Pinwheels

1/2 lb. sliced bacon, cooked and crumbled
1 cup finely chopped fresh mushrooms
1 cup finely chopped green onions
1/4 cup finely chopped basil or 4 t. dried basil
2 T. minced fresh chives

Pound flank steaks on both sides.  Combine bacon, mushrooms, onions, basil and chives. Spread evenly over steaks. Roll meat and secure with skewers or wooden picks. Cut each roll into 1/2" to 3/4" slices and secure each slice with a skewer or wooden pick. Grill over hot fire for 4-6 minutes, or until meat reaches desired doneness. Remove picks before serving. Serves: 6-8.

When I saw the Olive Sandwich Spread posted by Sherrill in San Antonio (March 25th), it brought back memories of my mother. She and I liked olive sandwiches (the other siblings didn't), and occasionally we would fix one. Then she told me the story of when she and her best friend Katherine Cox were youngsters in grammar school and when the lunchroom would have olive sandwiches they would get so excited. They took their "nickel" and bought a sandwich. She said that it had 1/2 of an olive on the sandwich. I would say, "Mama, how did you even know that it was an olive sandwich, and how could it have tasted that good -how could you taste it?" Needless to say, when we fixed an olive sandwich the olive slices were spread all over the bread. I don't think that I have had an olive sandwich since mother died in 1999 -although I do like them. Thanks Sherrill for the trip down memory lane!

Hi Nancy and All,
First thanks everyone about the rhubarb quest. Mom & I are going to New Port Richey next week and I"ll look in the Publix down there.

Now, I've got a request. Back in the late 50's in Junior High cooking class we made Chop Suey. I lost my recipe and can't find one similar anywhere. Would anyone remember it??? I know it had to be fairly easy as I was in 7th grade, I think.

I love this newsletter and Thank you so much, Nancy, for all your hard work.

Hi everyone,
This is in answer to Sandy about the Wal-Mart "problem". I emailed them a couple weeks ago when I first heard about it. According to their customer service they are NOT totally eliminating the fabric depart. The NEW stores however, probably, will not have this dept. From what I gathered they wouldn't take it out of the stores in the more rural areas. Where I live that's the only place in town to get sewing adn fabric supplies so I was very concerned. Now I'm waiting to see if what they said is true!!

My nine-year-old son has just been restricted to 1,500 mgs of salt a day because he was hospitalized for a kidney infection. I am also supposed to be watching my cholesterol. Does anyone have any TNT low-sodium recipes that actually taste good? I sure would appreciate it! Any ideas or suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

For Carolyn in Los Banos
For using up jelly/jam, etc.

Matrimonial Bars
Cream: 3/4 cup margarine or butter
1 cup brown sugar
Add: 1 3/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp. soda

Crumble in:
1-1/2 cups oats...either quick or old fashioned. Pat half of this mixture into a 'pammed' 9 x 13 pan. Spread on about 1 cup of jam (or to cover). Pat on rest of crumbs. Bake 20-25 minutes at 400 degree

I make this when I have several 'almost empty' jars of jam left, too..
it doesn't matter if flavors are different, just spread each one as
far as it will go.

Cut into bars when cool- sometimes I sprinkle on powdered sugar when putting on a serving plate but this is not necessary.

To Jackie that sent in the link for Woolworths recipes. I loved this site, not only for those recipes, but all the "Nostalgic" other recipes. Thank you. I noticed they didn't mention refrigerating the Canned milk (milnot) overnight,( we used Carnation) with the beaters and bowl, I know that was in the original from Woolworth's, I'm the one that made it in 1962, ha.. That is a wonderful time saver if you forget to refrigerate
them. Thank you. VERY intereting.

Gail in LA. wanted to know how to keep birds out of hanging plants. I had the same problem last year and I came up with the idea of putting rubber snakes in my plants and it worked. I got them at Wal-Mart. Be careful though, you will forget about them being there, start to water them and get a fright. LOL.
I hope this solves your problem.
Jean in TN.

This is for Gail in LA from the March 25th newsletter. You were asking how to keep birds out of your ferns and building nests in them. This is what I have done for several years and I don't have problems with the birds any more. I buy cheap rubber snakes at the Dollar Store and put them around the plants. No birds. I do have to remind myself that I have rubber snakes there, but soon I get used to it.
