Billie in FL was looking for cookies, sort of soft, made with mince meat. This is a recipe that I make. It has just a few ingredients and I wonder if it's the same as what you made.

Cookies
1 cup shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
3 1/4 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp. soda
1 1/2 cups mincemeat
chopped nuts if desired

Cream shortening and sugar, add egg and mix again, mix in flour, salt and soda. Fold in mincemeat and nuts if desired. Drop from a spoon and bake on a greased pan at 350 degrees for about 7-10 minutes.

I also am a senior but I don't feel like it, I'm 63 and feel like a teenager at heart. I had both knees replaced a couple of years ago and when it was over it was well worth it. If you ever have to have that operation and need both done, do them at the same time if your doctor recommends it. I really wouldn't like to think about going back to have that second knee replaced. Now I can stand for hours and do what I enjoy which is bake and I really like trying new recipes. My family all know that when they come for a meal or just dessert they are going to be guinea pigs. They don't seem to mind.

I joined up to receive this letter back in 2000 to find some recipes for my wife with her weight problem and look forward to it each day it is better than any Tranquilizer ever. Since I don't cook I can't invent any good recipes,. but I am constantly finding some my wife to try out on ME.

I am for ever running across some good ideas to help her out in the kitchen like this one showed below

I had a question for Connie in TX. concerning her Sugar Free Millionaire Pie.
This was posted in the 11/09/06 newsletter. In the ingredient list it says 1 flat can crushed pineapple - do not drain. What is a flat can of pineapple??? lol!!!
Im assuming she meant a small can?

Also a lady had a cool idea about stating our ages (she was a senior). Well Mariann from MI. thought it might be fun for all of us to do so!I think so too!!!

So here I am.
Im 45, well for a little longer, my birthday is Dec. 2nd, and live in northwestern MI.
Im married going on 27 years come this next Feb!
I have a daughter who is 24, will be 25 Dec. 15, she has given me two beautiful grand daughters who are 4 years old and 6 1/2 months old!!! (My doll's!!!)
I have a son who is 26, and a grand daughter from him who is 6 months old!
I live in the country and have a cockatiel, a red chow named Teddy Bear, and my new little 4 month old chocolate kitty named Dusty!!! (she can be so naughty!!!) lol!!!

I enjoy collecting recipe's and books among other things! (Im a bit of a pack rat!) I love camping. We like to go fishing too! Anything in nature! My hubby & I love to ride our motorcycle. (No!!! not bad bikers, just like to ride!) lol! We like to travel. Im always trying to lose weight and improve health.
I enjoy church, friends, family and meeting new people!

Thank you to everyone that shared information on grits. I purchased Quaker Quick Grits this morning on my grocery run and couldn't resist making them right away - for lunch. For my first attempt, I decided to just follow the package directions. I enjoyed them and look forward to lots of experimenting. Thanks Nancy for this outlet for such helpful information.

I think it is a good idea to introduce ourselves also. I'm Donna from Aurora, Colorado and I'm still 70, (lol) and have 3 children (one is deceased. When he was only 6 he was run over by a car, but I can't not mention him) ages 49 and 51, 3 granddaughters, ages 25, 28, and 30, and 6 great-granddaughters, ages 3 thru 10. They all live close by me and the little ones are all learning how to cook. Oh, I forgot, I also have a husband!! Hahahahaha

At all the family functions , I am always asked to bake desserts and I am honored that everyone really enjoys them . I will send some of my favorites next time.

Marilyn in FL it would be great if you sent in your recipe for fudge that uses Kahlua. I love Kahlua and cream when we go out to my husband's employee party. It is my favorite drink.

I am not a senior citizen but there is time I feel like I should be. I am 38 years old. I love this news letter. I have gotten many recipes from here. I have not tried a lot of them but I have quite the collection of them. I am going to try the easy fudge this year for Christmas. I am going to try many different kinds and give some as gifts.

I agree with Marianne in Michigan about introducing and telling a little about ourselves. My name is Melinda, I live in Tennessee. I am 45 years old. My hubby and I have been married for 23 years. We have a 15 year old son, a 20 year old daughter, a son-in-law and 6 month old grandson and another grandchild on the way, due next June. I also have 3 cats and 1 dog. I too am an avid cook and homemaker. I have been a double amputee and in a wheelchair for 6 years but don't let that fool you. I am as fast as I ever was at anything I ever did, well except for driving a car. LOL

I love Nancy and the newsletter and all the friendship that we all share here. As had been said before it is like we are all one big family. Thanks Nancy for all you do for us.

I'm a lurker, recently moved to NV to live next to my son -- I just turned 66 and have been gathering recipes from the Nancylanders for a few years now -- how in the world am I ever going to live long enough to cook all of them!?!? (I also need an extra life to read all the books I have collected.) But, I get great joy from just reading the recipes -- I can "almost" taste them as I read them. Hi Nancy. In reply to Donna in Il newsletter dated 11/10 she is looking for a simple and low fat recipe for Tilapia. We too love Tilapia, it is so mild tasting, not strong at all. The only thing that I use to cook ours is I roll it in Italian Seasoned Bread Crumbs, I use no other seasoning at all, not even salt. I then fry it in Pam or another brand of Olive Oil Spray. Used to use a lemon flavored spray but Pam doesn't make it anymore, at least I haven't been able to find it. I only brown the fish lightly on each side and its ready to eat. I squirt lemon juice on mine and my husband likes tartar sauce.

Nancy, It's so good to see so many seniors here. I am 64 years old .I have sent in a few recipes and I love to cook. I married at a very young age. Will celebrate our 51st  wedding anniversary on the 21st of next month. So you can do the math and see how young I was . We have 3 daughters,1 son, 5 grandsons ages 29, 22, 11, 10, and 5 years old. One granddaughter age 24 .we have 2 great-grandsons ages 5 ,4 .One great-granddaughter age 3.I really appreciate all the hard work Nancy put into getting this newsletter out to us. Hi, I am Lisa in Ft. Worth and have been a member of the group forever. Well, almost. I signed up in 1996 and when I changed email addresses lost the address of the site. Just recently I found it again. Love the site as much as always. Many improvements have been made over the years. I remember the newsletter when it had a recipe or two and a thought for the day. I must be much younger than most here or maybe just younger among the ones that have responded. I say I am 29 but have been for more than 10 years.

Hi Nancy. Well I too am a senior. I have been a member of Daily Recipe Exchange for about 5 years now and I still copy and paste a lot of the recipes. I guess maybe if I live to be a thousand I might get a chance to cook most of them. I am 67, will be 68 in Feb. I love this newsletter and the Nancylanders that make it up. Most of all Nancy, who does so much for us and puts it all together. She is great, heck look at her cats, she even has them trained as helpers.

For Sara in MN, thank you so much for submitting the Pumpkin Salad recipe last week. I made it 2 nights ago and its good. Thanks to your submission, I created a new recipe. I didn't have the pumpkin or the mini marshmallows at the time so I made this instead. My 18 yr old son named it Oreo Dream. This comes out tasting like a rich chocolate mousse with Oreos.

Oreo Dream
1 12 ounce container of Cool Whip
1 small box of Sugar-free Jello Chocolate Pudding
1 7 ounce jar of Marshmallow Cream
2 cups of roughly broken up Oreo Cookies
Sprinkle the dry pudding mix directly into the Cool Whip until well blended then add the rest of the ingredients. Put it all back into the Cool Whip container and let it sit in the refrigerator for about 4 hours and then serve.

I didn't know what the proper equivalents for the different kinds of marshmallows were so I looked it up for all of us.
16 large marshmallows = 1/2 a pound of marshmallow
16 large marshmallows = 1 cup of Marshmallow Creme
10 large marshmallows = 1 cup of Mini marshmallows
10 mini marshmallows - 1 large marshmallow

To make a one 7 ounce jar of Marshmallow creme, melt 16 ounces of marshmallows with 1/4 cup of corn syrup in a double boiler. The info came from Cook's Thesaurus: Sugar

For Alicia In CA regarding where to buy Puff Pastry. Alicia, almost all of the big markets in CA have a brand called Pepperidge Farms Puff Pastry in the freezer section where you'd find frozen breads or pie crusts. Puff Pastry - Home is their web site or you can type in www.puffpastry.com.

I am sorry I do not give out email addresses to other members on the site due to privacy issues. If you would like to join our recipe message board (link listed at the top of the page) you can drop by the Patio area and pass information on to each other. After a robbery last year I am very hesitant to give out any information to anyone. In Jan 2006 I came home to robbers parked in my garage (with the door closed) and it did not occur to me that there are criminals out there that could hurt you. I hadn't every meet any close up before. Now I don't give out any information to anyone. I was lectured by the police it is much safer. It never knew that there are people that are not trustworthy.

I finally decided that I will weigh in with the "seniors" who frequent this web site Nancy. Judging from most of the recipes requested and submitted, I think that there is a greater majority of senior ladies/and gentlemen than younger. I began my 7th decade in September. I grew up cooking "from scratch". We didn't have microwaves or frozen veggies in a bag. Crockpots were a revelation. My daughter is 39 and her cooking habits are quite different from mine. I think she keeps the Schwan man in her area in business. :))

Having said all that, however, I must agree with Myron Drinkwater and the sloppy joes recipes. I learned to make them from scratch years ago. We make them in large quantities for church functions and have found that it is far easier to use the Manwich sauce - or better yet - the store brand (which is cheaper) than make our own. You really can't tell the difference. We keep an eye out for when the sauce goes on sale and stock up.

I have to agree with everyone else, this is the best web site.

Thought I would add my age and rank to the list. I'm 39, live on Cape Cod, own my own pet sitting & dog walking business, and LOVE to cook. I look forward to this newsletter everyday (love when Nancy forgets about Thursday!!!!). My fondness for cooking came to me at a very early age because my mother never cooked, she was a really bad cook, and all the other moms in the neighborhood were such avid cooks that I was always watching them create these wonderful casseroles, cookies and cakes while the kids played outside (I liked cooking much more!). I was not the child watching Sesame Street, rather I was watching Julia Child and the Galloping Gourmet!!! Great memories. So, thank you Nancy, and thank you everyone for being so eager to share your treasured recipes & ideas. Of course we have to thank the furry office helpers too.

When cats/kittens spend time outdoors, they sometimes pick up a bacteria the lives on their teeth. Humans often are very susceptible to this germ, but not all humans!.

We've had this problem twice over the last 20 yrs, and the Veterinarian helped the Doctor decide on the right antibiotic. This is not a health risk to the cat, thank goodness!
