To Judy in Ohio re: glass top stove. My stove came with a scraper to be used for scrapping off burned on foods and spills. It is like the one we used on windows when we got paint on them. It has a razor like blade in it. Works great for me maybe it will for
you. ann/al

Are there many points in the danish, snickers and milkshake? These recipes sound really good.

I couldn't resist experimenting with using baking soda in my English muffins to produce holes for holding butter/jelly. I added 1/8 tsp baking soda to the dry ingredients in my favorite recipe for sourdough English muffins and omitted the salt because of the baking soda sodium content.

I always cut, raise on cornmeal and bake without an extra rising, thus eliminating all the extra steps in the King Arthur recipe I found yesterday.

I got excellent results -- plenty of holes with good flavor and texture.

My advice, use your favorite English muffin recipe adding 1/8 tsp baking soda with every three cups of flour. Knead, cut, raise and bake. Hope they come out well for you.

Here is an autumn recipe readers might enjoy.

September Supper
1 medium head cabbage, cored and thinly sliced
3 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
3 large tart apples, peeled and thinly sliced
1 large onion, chopped
6 tbsp butter
Salt and pepper
1 cup heavy cream
2 cups dry bread crumbs
1/2 cup grated sharp Cheddar cheese

In a large greased casserole, layer 1/3 of the cabbage, potatoes, apples and onion; dot with 2 tbsp butter. Repeat layering two more times. Season with salt and pepper throughout. Pour cream evenly over all. Cover with aluminum foil and with the casserole cover and bake at 350 degrees 45 minutes. remove from oven. Sprinkle with
bread crumbs and cheese and dot with butter. Return to oven and bake, uncovered, until top is crusty .

I have finally used up my supply of homemade hamburg rolls and made another batch, so can furnish the water quantity.
.
I did notice that in my original submission I said the recipe was for 6 rolls and then gave ingredient quantities for 3. Sorry about that -- if you still have it, delete and use this.

Jam asks the weight of dough balls for hamburger and hot dog rolls. I make mine 3 1/2 to 4 ounces. My recipe for six rolls:

3 cups bread flour
(or 2 1/2 cups bread flour & 1/2 cup whole wheat flour)

2 tsp sugar
pinch of salt
2 tsp dry yeast in 1/2 cup warm water
2 Tbsp olive oil
3/4 cup water

You can mix this dough by hand, or in your food processor. It should work in a bread machine, but please compare the ratio of water and flour with your standard bread machine ratio and adjust as necessary.

I form the rolls as I saw Julia Child demonstrate many years ago. Hold 1/6 of the dough in your left palm. Alternately push LEFT thumb into the dough ball and pull dough out into a "pooch" (Julia's words) with all fingers of RIGHT hand. If you do this correctly,
you will end up with rounded dough against your left palm and a pointy "nose" sticking out toward the right.

Now put a sprinkle of flour on your counter or pastry cloth and press the nose side of the ball down on the counter. Flour the rounded top lightly and roll into a perfect round with rolling pin.

This sounds complex, but with a bit of practice you will get perfect rounds every time. I even use this method to make perfectly round piecrusts.
Thank you Julia.

I want to put up a bird feeder for Ditto to watch birds.  Does anyone have ideas on how to make an inexpensive bird feeder.  I don't want to attract the big black birds but rather finches and birds like that. I have several humming birds that come by every afternoon to my flower garden.  Suggestions would be appreciated

Here are some more ideas for games to play at a baby shower.

Read the first few lines of a nursery rhyme, such as Mary had a little lamb. The lamb was white as snow. The guests have to write down the remainder of the rhyme, or as much as they can remember. The guest who remembers the most rhymes wins. You
can do the same activity with children’s songs, such as Old  McDonald, Itsy Bitsy Spider, and the Wheels on the Bus go Round. You can have pre-printed sheets with the beginning of the rhyme or song. The guests can read or sing their answers to make the
activity even more fun.

Melt different kinds of Chocolate candy bars in diapers and ask the guests to identify the name of the candy bar. It is fun to watch the guests pass the diapers around, open them up, smell the contents and even taste it to determine which candy bar is in
the diaper. The guest with the most correct answers wins.

The Tray Game with a TWIST ~ everyone knows how to play the tray game of course but this one has a little twist to it. Have a tray with various baby items on it and walk around with it or pass it around to each guest (prefer hostess hold it), give all guests
paper to write down everything they remember but not about the items on the tray?

Here's the twist. Just before asking the guests to begin making their lists, ask the Mother-to-Be to step into your kitchen or another room for a moment as if you wanted to talk to her. Then, after making her comfortable, go back and tell the guests they
need to answer your questions about the mother-to-be. Here are some examples.

What is the main color that she is wearing?
What type of shoe or sandal is she wearing?
Is she wearing long sleeves or short sleeves?
How is her hair styled?
Is she wearing jewelry? If yes, list the jewelry.
Did she bring a purse? Describe it.
When is her baby due?
What names has she chosen for her newborn?
The guest with the most correct answers wins.

Nancy, I know you are a very busy woman but the tales of Siggy and Ditto would make lovely children stories. I am sure someone in Nancyland could help you publish your enchanting stories. Just a thought.

How do you make mashed potatoes that can be frozen and how long can they be kept in freezer - I need the same infor for baked goods - how long can you keep them in the freezer after baking.
Thank you - Bernie in TN

Hi Nancylanders, I have a microwave kitchen tip. I buy a pkg of 200 very inexpensive plain white paper plates, and keep it by the microwave. Each time we use the microwave, we stick one on top of whatever we are heating and voila! No splatters at
all! I very seldom have to clean mine. I hate that job!

Evening Nancy, hope you are ok?
I really enjoyed Sandy in ND's bread machine tips, Sandy would you consider copying your words of wisdom to our Nancy's Message Boards. There are a lot of younger people now getting into making their own bread and need all the help they can get, there are a lot of hints on the boards already, but the more the merrier. Thanks in advance the link is:

For Nan, Thanks for your reply to my Roomba question, I think maybe I won't be able to afford one either. Expensive battery.

Trish in Fl, this is for you. We really like this recipe, hope it's what you're looking for.

Sloppy Joe?
1 pound lean ground beef
1/2 cup each--chopped onion, chopped green bell pepper, chopped celery
1/2 tsp. garlic powder ( I just minced a garlic clove)
1 tsp. Dijon mustard
1/3 cup ketchup
1/3 cup BBQ sauce
1Tbs. liquid smoke
1 Tbs. worchestershire
1 small can mushrooms, stems and pieces
1 to 1 1/2 tsp. lemon juice
Tabasco Sauce

Brown beef, garlic, onion, bell pepper and celery. Drain off liquids. Stir in rest of ingredients and mix well, adding mushrooms last. Cover and simmer about 30 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. If this isn't moist enough, you can add a little water. Serve on toasted buns.

On September 19th, newsletters I saw Mary from CT request for two recipes she used many year ago form WW. This is the version I use and you have the name correct.

Myrecipe
I use was for 2 oz's cottage cheese, 1 package of sweetener, pinch of cinnamon, and a drop or two of vanilla, mix all together and put on toast and place under the broiler, applesauce or a teaspoon jelly is optional.

If my memory serves me rite
this was a breakfast. I also used Alba 77 with a small can of pineapple mix altogether and placed in freezer. This was a serving of milk and fruit and it was 2 servings. Enjoy. I can't find ALBA any longer so I use sugar free package of cocoa and still enjoy when I
am looking for something to satisfy my sweet tooth. I found a new way of eating when I became a WW. I still follow the original program with a scale by my side.

Hope I have helped you. Nancy I want to wish you a very Happy Birthday. So sorry about your loss, I sure he was a best friend.

Question: can items made with mayonnaise be frozen? I am thinking mainly of chicken, turkey, tuna, or ham salad (for sandwiches).

About the smell in the car - pull out the back seat. I had a large mouse nest under mine and all the nesting material. I pulled out all the old nesting, sprayed the whole car with odor be gone (I got it at Wal-Mart) and plugged up the hole where they were getting in
with an old SOS pad and sealed it with duct tape. it solved my problem.

Hi Nancy, This is for Judy in Ohio regarding cleaning a glass topped stove. My daughter recommended I use DAWN POWER DISSOLVER no scrubbing on my oven racks. I put the racks in the shower give them a good spraying with the dissolver, let set several hours then turn shower on hot to rinse. This is also good and easy to remove burned on grease on bottom of pans. DAWN DIRECT FOAM is good to use on glass top stoves to remove fresh grease spatters. I let it set for a few minutes, wipe off with a damp cloth. Then polish the stove top with a dry clean paper napkin.

Nancy I can relate to how you miss a companion animal. We had to have a special kitty go to the rainbow bridge. He would sleep curled up to my stomach. The nite after he left I felt like something had snuggled up in his place. It was so vivid I had to feel the bed. I felt like it was tuffy telling me bye.

Love your stories especially the one about chasing the wrong cat for 2 hours. I had made an appointment to take a stray cat in to be altered. The day before the appointment, a black cat crawled up on our porch, hurt so bad he was euthanized.

After cancelling the appointment, I get up the next morning and there was the cat I had planned on having altered.
